Sports Injuries Physiotherapist Milsons Point

What to do in different phases of healing a Sports Injury:

Acute:

This is the inflammatory phase of an injury. While inflammation is good in the early stages of an injury as it is taking away damaged cells, it is best it doesn’t extend more than a few days. Physio treatment is directed toward reducing inflammation in this early phase, so the remodelling phase can commence. 1-3 days. Try compression, elevation and rest.

Remodelling:

This is the phase where new connective tissue is being laid down to heal the injured area. The collagen fibres are arranged in a haphazard arrangement at first. As you begin rehabilitation and specific exercises the collagen fibres realign making the tissue stronger in preparation for returning to sport. 1 – 6 weeks. Give the correct stimulus to optimise healing.

Return to sport:

In this phase  movement patterns are retrained. The neuromuscular system has to be reminded how to move well again.  Its amazing how quickly bad habits start! Physio provides you with proprioception or balance exercises, and strengthening to encourage more quality healing to make the repair strong. It is important to continue stretching to ensure the fibres align in this phase. 6 weeks – 3 months. Yoga is perfect in this stage!
