Pain

Nerve pain can be unrelenting and all consuming. There is a solution to relieving this pain.

You may have pain from Peripheral nerves irritrated or compressed as they travel through muscles or joints.

With chronic pain the brain or central nervous system may become sensitised. This type of pain requires a holistic approach to treatment – this is where the combination of physiotherapy with yoga therapy can help.

We assess your medical history, all the injuries you have had, and current lifestyle. We ‘unwind’ the tension in your body and reset your system to allow you to move more freely, and relieve pain

A-J has been treating pain for years; it is a special area of interest of hers. She can feel where the tissue is tight, or may be ‘entraping’ or irritating a nerve. From years of clinical experience she has gained a library of sensation in the hands.

Treatment may comprise of gentle massage, mobilisation or stretching. You nerves need to be moving freely through your body to be pain-free. The central nervous system component is treated with breathing and mindful movement with awareness.

Nerve Entrapment

Nerves can get trapped as they travel through muscles, through fascia (connective tissue), and around joints. Anywhere along their pathway they can get ‘stuck’ in the surrounding connective tissue, be compressed, or affected by inflamation.

There are evidence based tests to determine where a nerve may be getting  ‘entrapped’.

Treatment includes gentle massage, and “nerve glides” where the nerve is gentely mobilised to “slide and glide” more freely through the tissues in which it is getting caught.

A-J is an experienced Physiotherapist in this treatment, she can diagnose which nerve is causing your pain and how it needs to be treated to relieve your pain.

Case Study: Knee Pain – entrapped nerve

Have you had pain around your kneecap that has not responded to regular physio strengthening exercises? Chances are your knee pain is caused by an entrapped nerve called the saphenous nerve.

The saphenous nerve travels down from the spine to your inner thigh, it then branches out to travel below and around your kneecap.

If it is compressed anywhere along its path it can cause pain in the knee. You may feel a tender point about 10cm up from your knee on your inner thigh. A trained physio can gently release the nerve where it is being caught or entrapped.

Case Study: Sciatic Pain – It’s Not Always From the Back!

Sciatica can be caused by the sciatic nerve being irritated as it passes by or through a tight piriformis muscle — one of the deep hip rotator muscles.

Sciatica doesn’t always originate from the spine, even when a scan shows changes there. Did you know that radiological findings don’t reliably correlate with pain? This has been shown in studies involving thousands of people and their scans.

So… are you a “butt gripper”? Sciatic pain can be brought on by squeezing your glutes, sitting on them for too long, or sitting with your legs crossed. Butt gripping is when the cheeks are clenched together and the tailbone is tucked under — this is different from actively strengthening your gluteal muscles. If this sounds like you, working with a physio on retraining these movement patterns can help.
