Thoracic Rings and Treatment

A Whole-Body Perspective – Movement and Pain

The Thoracic Ring Approach™, developed by Canadian physiotherapist and researcher Dr. Linda-Joy (LJ) Lee, offers a new and powerful way to understand how your ribcage and upper back (your thorax) affect your whole body.

This approach considers how the ribcage moves and functions — and how that impacts breathing, posture, pain, and movement from head to toe.

Why Focus on the Thorax?

The thorax is the largest section of your spine and plays a vital role in:

  • Breathing
  • Supporting your posture
  • Rotating and stabilizing your trunk
  • Helping transfer load and force through your body when you move

Most people think of the thorax as a stiff, stable area because of the ribcage. But in reality, each “thoracic ring” (a section of two vertebrae and the ribs that connect to them) has 13 joints, and all of them are designed to move. If they aren’t moving or being controlled well, that can create stress and dysfunction in other parts of the body.

What Is a “Thoracic Ring”?

A thoracic ring includes:

  • Two neighboring vertebrae in your upper/mid-back
  • The disc between them
  • The ribs that connect to those vertebrae
  • The cartilage and breastbone (sternum) attachments at the front

This entire ring works together as a functional unit, and its movement can influence how well your body performs in daily life, sport, or even just standing and breathing comfortably.

Thoracic Ring = left and right rib, connecting to the breast bone and 2 vertebrae.

What Makes the Thoracic Ring Approach™ Different?

Traditionally, therapists have looked at the spine and ribs separately, often checking movement only from the back. LJ Lee’s approach instead examines how these structures work together during real-life tasks like reaching, bending, walking, or lifting.

What’s unique:

  • It focuses on how your body moves during meaningful activities, not just lying on a table.
  • It includes gentle hands-on techniques and specific movement retraining.
  • It looks at whether the thorax is the underlying cause (or “driver”) of other issues, even if the thorax itself doesn’t hurt.

How Can the Thorax Be the Root of So Many Problems?

You might not feel pain in your ribcage or upper back, but a dysfunctional thoracic ring can quietly create problems elsewhere by:

  • Changing how forces move through your body
  • Disrupting muscle balance
  • Affecting breathing and core stability
  • Influencing how your nervous system reacts to stress and movement

When this happens, your body often develops compensations—movements or muscle patterns that try to work around the problem, but often lead to pain or injury elsewhere.

Conditions the Thoracic Ring Approach™ Can Help With

This approach is used to help people with many conditions, including:

  • Low back pain
  • Pelvic girdle and SI joint pain
  • Poor core control
  • Shoulder pain, impingement, or instability
  • Neck pain and headaches
  • Jaw tension (TMJ disorders)
  • Recurrent hamstring or groin strains
  • Hip impingement, adductor pain
  • Sports hernia
  • Knee pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Urinary incontinence or prolapse

In many of these cases, the thorax is the hidden link—not because it hurts, but because it’s not functioning well.

How Does Treatment Work?

Using ring-specific hands-on techniques, movement retraining, and exercises, the therapist helps restore healthy movement in the thoracic rings.

We assess how you move during meaningful tasks—like walking, lifting, or breathing—and then test how gentle corrections to the thoracic rings affect your symptoms and performance. If improving movement in the thorax changes your pain or ability, we’ve likely found your “primary driver.”

The goal is not just to treat pain, but to change how your body moves and functions, so you can enjoy more ease, energy, and strength in everyday life.

A Final Word

The Thoracic Ring Approach™ helps us move beyond ideas of “core stability” and rigid spines. It encourages us to see the thorax as a dynamic, essential part of how the body moves, breathes, and performs.

If you’re dealing with ongoing pain, movement challenges, or postural issues—and haven’t found lasting answers—this approach may offer the missing piece.

Here at Physio Body and Sole we are fully qualified to treat Thoracic Ring dysfunction, helping relieve pain from altered movement, and help your whole body function.
