Shoulder Pain and Muscular Imbalance.

Our shoulders are wonderfully mobile joints—but that mobility comes with a trade-off: they’re vulnerable to overload and instability if the surrounding muscles aren’t well-balanced. If you’ve ever felt tightness in your neck, aching in your upper arms, or a dull pinch when reaching overhead, it’s time to take a closer look at your shoulder muscle balance and posture.

Why Shoulder Balance Matters

The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket structure that relies heavily on muscular support, especially because it has a relatively shallow socket. This design gives us our incredible range of motion, but it also puts us at risk of impingement, instability, and overuse injuries.

Poor posture—like slumping at a desk or rounding your shoulders when you’re tired—can alter the position of your shoulder blade (scapula), crowding the space where your rotator cuff tendons glide. Over time, this can lead to impingement, where soft tissues are pinched or inflamed during movement.

An understanding of how your shoulder works can help you strengthen your shoulder more effectively. The muscles need to work together in a coordinated fashion.

Meet Your Rotator Cuff

The rotator cuff is a group of four small but mighty muscles that stabilise the shoulder joint and help it move smoothly:

  • Supraspinatus – lifts the arm out to the side
  • Infraspinatus and Teres Minor – rotate the arm outward
  • Subscapularis – rotates the arm inward

When these muscles are strong and coordinated, they help keep the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) centred in the shoulder socket, especially during lifting and overhead actions.

In physio yoga, we focus on strengthening these deep muscles, not just stretching or mobilising the area. This gives your shoulder a stable foundation to move freely without irritation.

Shoulder-Neck-Rib Cage Connection

It’s not just about the shoulder muscles themselves. The way your rib cage, upper spine (thoracic spine), and neck are connected and positioned (posture) affects how your shoulders function.

Your shoulder blade sits on the rib cage, gliding and rotating across the ribs with arm movements. If your rib cage is stiff, or asymmetrical due to muscular imbalance, or if the neck is held forward, this elegant movement system gets compromised.

As a result, your neck muscles may overwork leading to tension and pain.

Through mindful exercises, we can retrain these relationships:

  • Mobilise the upper back and ribs to allow full shoulder blade mobility
  • Correct your posture
  • Balancing neck and shoulder muscles to reduce tension and improve alignment

There is a rhythm between the action of your shoulder joint, shoulder blade and ribs. When this rhythm is disrupted by tight muscles or weakness, the shoulder does not function well and pain can result.

To restore the muscular balance of the shoulder joint A-J will;

  1. Assess which muscles are weak and which are tight
  2. Restore Balance between all the components;
  • Between the arm bone and shoulder blade
  • Between the shoulder blade and rib cage
  • Between the ribs themselves or “thoracic rings“.

One example of an exercise you may be taught:

Pushups “plus” against a wall. Monitor your shoulder blade position, learn how it feels as you push against the wall. Practice your pushup action by placing your hands on the wall and, with a straight elbow, move only the shoulder blade.

Spinal stiffness, upper body tension and poor posture all affect the shoulder joints and must be addressed.

Our functional yoga classes specifically work at balancing the muscles of your spine, rib cage and shoulders.
