How you can experience Physio Therapy Yoga

CLINICAL YOGA

What is it?

Clincal Yoga or Yoga Therapy is yoga for the individual. It is tailored to the individual to help recover from pain, stiffness, injury, improve posture, breathing, relaxation and more. It is yoga to support an individual’s specific goals. Practices are tailored to the individual person, their needs, abilities, and circumstances. These sessions are taught by a physiotherapist and experienced yoga therapist.

Who does it help?

If you need rehabilitation-focused yoga to rebuild trust in your body by improving:

  • recover from pain
  • restore mobility and flexibility
  • regain strength and stability
  • gain balance and coordination
  • breathe and relaxation
  • regualate your nervous system
  • become aware of movement patterns and habits contributing to strain

Yoga translates into everyday life

Practices are functional and transferable into daily life — squatting, reaching, balancing, bending, twisting, walking, lifting… getting through your day with more ease.

How is Clinical Yoga Therapy different?

This is not a one-size-fits-all yoga class.

Sessions are tailored specifically to you and include:

  • a physiotherapy assessment
  • posture and movement analysis
  • yoga-based exercises
  • quality breathing
  • hands-on release for tight muscles
  • education about pain and your movement patterns

What you will gain

An education about how your body works, how to change it to work most efficiently for you, and a personalised home practice designed to fit into your life. This is a mind-body practice – it is more than just exercise.

PHYSIO - YOGA CLASSES

Physio lead Yoga classes in North Sydney – Milsons Point and Cammeray offer a supportive, low-impact environment for you to regain flexibility, strength, stability, relaxation, and calm –  tailored for all levels.

Taught by A-J, a physiotherapist, yoga teacher and yoga therapist with over 30 years of experience.

Classes incorporate physiotherapy movement knowledge with traditional yoga postures (Hatha, Iyengar and Viniyoga), breathing practices, and mindfulness.

What to Expect:

The classes begins with a “centering” practice helping you feel present in your body. You become aware of how a focus on breathing with movement can ease tension in your muscles and help you feel calmer.

The practice builds up to more challenging poses (with options suitable for every level).  Every week the focus slightly changes, buiolding on the last one. Practice regularly, and the benefits will show.

The winding-down phase of a class is more gentle stretching with breathing to further enhance awareness of your body (how to release tension), breath and mind.

The focus is to help your body function more efficiently, with less tension, compensation, and return to ease and comfort.

As Tirumalai Krishnamacharya said:

“Yoga must be made to suit the individual, not the individual to suit the yoga.” No two sessions are the same, because no two bodies — or lives — are the same.

Should I Have a Physiotherapy Consultation First?

Not necessarily. You join a class without an assessment.

However, if you have pain, an injury, a medical condition, or any concerns about how your body will cope with yoga, a physiotherapy consultation beforehand can be very worthwhile.

A-J will conduct a comprehensive assessment of you to understand your symptoms, movement patterns, goals, and any limitations. She will explain her findings, answer your questions, and help you understand and learn any yoga poses that may need to be modified.

You’ll be guided through yoga poses that are helpful to your body and shown how to adapt them so you can participate safely and confidently in class.

If you choose to have an initial physiotherapy consultation before joining classes, your first yoga class is complimentary.
